四谷シモン -Simon Yotsuya-
1944年東京・五反田生まれ。タンゴの楽師である父、ダンサーの母という芸能一家で育つ。
小学生の頃から人形を作り始める。10代半ばで人形作家・川崎プッペを訪ね、17歳の時、一時ぬいぐるみ人形作家水上雄次の内弟子になる。
歌手のニーナ・シモンが好きだったことから「シモン」の渾名が付く。
1965年、雑誌『新婦人』に掲載されていた、澁澤龍彦の紹介によるハンス・ベルメールの球体関節人形を見て衝撃を受け、それまでの人形制作方法を捨てる。人形とは「人のかたち」であり関節で動くもの、人形とは人形そのものであると悟り、以後、独学で球体関節人形の制作を始め、新しい人形表現の地平を切り拓いた。
金子國義を通じて、澁澤龍彦、唐十郎と知り合う。1967年、唐十郎の状況劇場の芝居「ジョン・シルバー新宿恋しや夜鳴篇」に女形として出演する。
1968年3月から6月にかけて、状況劇場の紅テントの芝居「由井正雪」に「的場のお銀」役で出演する。このときから「四谷シモン」の芸名を使う。
昭和46年まで状況劇場の役者として活動する。現在は、日本における球体関節人形の第一人者として国内のみならず海外からも高く評価されている。
Simon Yotsuya
Simon Yotsuya was born in Gotanda, Tokyo in 1944.
He was born into an artistic family, his father was a tango player and his mother was a dancer.
He started making dolls as a child and he visited Puppe Kawasaki, a doll maker, in his mid-teens. At the age of 17, he was apprenticed to Yuji Mizugami, a doll maker, for a temporary period of time.
He was called “Simon” as he liked the singer Nina Simon.
In 1965, he found an article and pictures of ball-joint dolls of Hans Bellmer, introduced by Tatsuhiko Shibusawa in the magazine “Shinfujin”. It gave him a very strong impact over doll making and he came to abandon his method in the past.
He realized that doll is “a shape of human” and its joints should be flexible and doll is truly a doll. Since then, he started making ball-joint dolls on his own and he craved out his own way of new doll expression.
He met Tatsuhiko Shibusawa and Karajuro through Kuniyoshi Kaneko.
He performed a female role at the theatrical show produced by Karayuro. In 1968, from March to June, he appeared at the theatrical show preformed at red tent. From this period, he started using his stage name “Simon Yotsuya”. He performed as an actor at the theater until 1971. Today, he has high reputation as the first ball-join doll maker in Japan both domestically and internationally.
Seven dolls and his pastel drawings as well as six of his new limited collection “Hand” will be displayed at the exhibition at LIBRAIRIE6. We hope you enjoy this exhibition.
